When I go on the XBox Live Leaderboards for Rock Band 2, you are not ranked number 1. In fact you're not even close. Why is that?
There is a really bad mathematical error in the Rock Band 2 leaderboards. A rep from Harmonix has stated that they are aware of the issue and are trying to fix it. The Scorehero.com leaderboard rankings are the only reliable place for accurate rankings at this time. You can view them here. When I go on the XBox Live Leaderboards for Rock Band 1, you are not ranked number 1. Why is that?
In Rock Band 1, on the song Blitzkrieg Bop, there is a glitch that can be exploited for an exponential amount of points. Although the highest glitched score on the leaderboard is only about 300,000 points, one person proved that the glitch can yield over 1 million points. The highest score that should be obtainable without this glitch is around 138000 points. While Harmonix did not fix this issue or the leaderboards in Rock Band 1, Scorehero.com took action and limited all Blitzkrieg Bop vocals scores to a maximum of 138,000 points. Conversely, Scorehero.com is the only reliable place for accurate rankings for Rock Band 1 vocals. You can view them here. What is the "Blitzkrieg Bop Glitch"? How does it work?
In Rock Band expert vocals, you get 1000 points when you get an "awesome" on a phrase. When you get 3 "awesomes" in a row, you get a multiplier of 4x. You keep your 4x multiplier as long as you don't get less than an "awesome" on a phrase. You also accumulate what is known as "overdrive" when you get an "awesome" on a phrase with gold notes. When you have enough overdrive, you can activate it by yelling during one of the empty areas in between phrases. When you activate overdrive, it gives you an extra 2x multiplier, raising your maximum possible multiplier to 8x. Thus the most points possible on any phrase in Rock Band under the rules of the game is 8000 points. On the final phrase of Blitzkrieg Bop, you can obtain an "awesome" well before the end of the phrase and this occurs right around the moment that your ovedrive is running out (if you use the correct overdrive path). Now, if you get an awesome before your overdrive runs out, you should get 8000 points for that phrase. However, the problem is that the game engine is broken and gives you random amounts of points on this phrase, sometimes totalling in the hundreds of thousands. This glitch nullified the effects of pathing and squeezing in Rock Band 1 and thus all reliability of those leaderboards. Does the "Blitzkrieg Bop Glitch" exist on other songs? Does it still exist in Rock Band 2?
Yes and yes. The glitch was proven to exist on other songs in Rock Band 1, though no where near the level seen in Blitzkrieg Bop. It also still exists in Rock Band 2, specifically in Give It Away and Painkiller, though the effect of the glitch appears to be much less in Rock Band 2. However, it is no longer possible to glitch the final phrase of Blitzkrieg Bop, as Harmonix apprently patched the imported version of the song to have much more difficult talkies. More to come?
